There was excitement. First child. My first NIECE (I have 2 monsterous nephews). I can see that my brother and sis in law was so excited about this special event. Even my parents were excited. He ordered some Malay kuih muih (delicacies), and bought drinks, fruits, and more.
His friend brought some really delicious potato curry puffs. This was really good, I tell you! The pastry is very tender, yet crispy. The curried potato filling was warm, soft, with a hint of pepper. It was yummy.
Lisa (sis in law) made some dessert. No matter how busy she was with work and her pregnancy, she managed to make a special Chilled Prune Pudding. I never knew prunes would taste so good in desserts! And this obviously finished very early on the party. I regretted not eating more of it before the larger crowd arrived! :-)
A family friend came, and surprised us with some Malay kuih as well. This yummy browned balls are called Cucur Badak (umm, direct translation: cucur: fritters, badak: hippo). This has got to be one of my favourite, favouuurriitee traditional Malay delicacy, breakfast or tea time. It's made from mashed sweet potatoes, and, in the middle of the balls, a spoonful of semi spicy fresh grated coconut & shrimp filling. This filling is fried with some chilli and turmeric, which makes it taste so good. The balls are deep fried till crispy on the skin, usually to a very brown colour like in the picture. You have got to try some of these if you're in Malaysia!
This is Cucur Keria, another famous Malay delicacies. Honestly, there is no translation for this. But, I would call it the Malay donut. It certainly is the right donut shape! Cucur keria is made from sweet potatoes, mashed, added with some flour and fried, and coated with some sugar. Hmm, just like the sugary donuts! This was also brought to my house from a friend. How nice... We're always grateful to receive food!
My mum, being the good cook she always is, could not just sit and receive food - she HAD to make some of her own too. We helped around in the kitchen, and we managed to make a really huge portion of fried bee hoon and fried mee. Malaysian parties is just not complete without this fried dish. It's just so good to eat it at parties, picnics, anywhere, anytime! I enjoy sprinkling those freshly chopped scallions, red chilli, fried tofu, and fried shallots. Yumm!
This is one more which mum cooked - pulut kunyit (sticky rice with turmeric). The sticky rice is placed in some water, with a bit if turmeric powder, and about 1 tablespoon of whole black pepper. It is then steamed with daun pandan (screwpine leaf) for about 20 minutes, added fresh cocout milk and mixed well using a wooden spoon. The taste?? So delicious you will crave for more. Eat this with come beef or chicken curry. We also had beef rendang that mum made the day before!
Mmm, string crepes or lacey pancakes, whatever you call it, in Malay it is popularly known as Roti Jala (Net bread, net as in the fishing net). My brother ordered this, alongwith some chicken curry. I did not really like the chicken curry, as it was too rich in coconut milk... but these roti jala were wonderful. I should write about this one day when my mum cooks this. Would be a shame to not learn how to make these!
These are made from plain wheat flour, blended in some water, santan and eggs. The yellow colour comes from a little bit of turmeric powder.
And these are Kuih Talam, another one of my favoutite Malay delicacies which is sold in many many Malay stalls and restaurants. The green and white toppings tastes of Santan (coconut milk), with the green being the colour from the daun pandan. The yellow is made from tapioca. So I have really been drooling over food and now I am hungry, after writing about all the yummilicious delicacies...
Guess what I did as my contribution to the party? I insisted on buying the birthday cake. Yup, this cute Tweety cake, with Black Forest underneath those creams and drawings. I are not bake a cake, not this special day. This is really nice, and my niece loved it - It's Tweety! Her favourite.
We cut Tweety into pieces to share with the guests. I think I ate the legs... I wonder who got the eyes... But for sure, the cake tasted really good, and I should say - very well done. I ordered this from a bakery in Tanjung Bungah. If you are around Penang, you might like to try this. It is just on the way to Batu Feringhi. They have various types of ready made cakes, or you can customize your cake from them. The Black Forest cost me RM58 for 1kg, and the drawing an additional RM10.00. Expensive? Not really, but it was worth every cent paid. The Bakery details:
