Of Laksa Assam & Popia Goreng

Earlier this morning, after reading Penang Tua Pui's post on an old favourite street food of mine, I was tempted to have some right away.

This is the mobile laksa & kuih seller, who used to sell his food behind the Penang Plaza every evening. This man, an Indian man, is very, very hardworking and nice. His food may not be served on tables where you can sit n' relax, chit chat, but rather, he comes by his motorbike while he serves his customers all by himself without fail.

It's an interesting way to be served really. some people say eating while you are standing is not a good etiquette. But the laksa is so good, the aroma itself calls you and lets you forget everything else and just order one.

I used to occasionally go over to have some laksa with my good friends. That was during college days years ago... and I just thought that this man had stopped selling his delicious food there, or moved. Thanks to Penang Tua Pui, I found out about his whereabouts and, I asked F if we could go check out.

We drove past Jalan Bawasih, and yippie! I was so happy and excited and suddenly, desperately wanted to have some laksa...

I bought 4 packs of laksa, some for my parents and some deep fried spring rolls (popia goreng). It was GOOD as it used to be... The laksa is the best. Savoury hot n' sour fish broth with laksa noodles... Yummm.... Yummmm... Yummmm....

i remember that guy! he speaks fluent hokkien kan? reminds me of the men of old who worked for the nyonyas because it wasn't ladylike for nyonyas to peddle their own goods.

where exactly is he now?

good ole days... the Indian man is very friendly too. I remember when I was little, there's an old indian food seller with pushcart that would sell the laksa and nyonya desserts. Some of these sellers even managed to balance the large covered round flat tray on their heads! That time, laksa were served in blue & white hexagon bowl and price??? Only MYR 0.15 per bowl with al the toppings... and I would have minimum 2 bowls and extras of pulut tai tai, kuih talam, cucur udang. The smile and sweat sitting along the 5-foot way (or 5 feet way) eating all that with my mom and sister were priceless - a ritual for 3 of us when we felt the urge to have supper after dinner... :-D
